Product InformationAstraZeneca’s cost-cutting plan may make it more difficult for its cholesterol drug to market as a generic, according to a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
In the study, published in the January issue of theJournal of the American Medical Association, the researchers found that consumers who pay more than 30% of their average cost of Lipitor would not be able to buy the drug until after the year, or until a year after the drug’s patent expires.
“The current price-cut plan is not working,” Dr. Praveen Kumar, an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Chicago School of Medicine, told the Journal of the American Medical Association.
The study was part of a research team led by the University of Southern California’s, a University of California-Chffield School of Medicine- School of Medicine-University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.
Doctors in the study were looking at pharmaceutical companies’ efforts to produce generic versions of drugs like Lipitor, Crestor and Zocor. In the study, the researchers found that consumers who pay more than 30% of their average cost of Lipitor would not be able to buy the drug until after the year, or until a year after the drug’s patent expires.
The researchers used a model that looked at how consumers pay for cholesterol drugs. Lipitor, sold as Lipitor, costs as much as $30 for a 30-tablet pack of Lipitor, but the average cost of a 30-tablet pack of Lipitor would be $25 per month.
The researchers found that the average cost for a 30-tablet pack of Lipitor would be about $8.50 per month for a month’s supply, compared with about $2.50 per month for a month’s supply of Lipitor.
In addition, the average cost of a 30-tablet pack of Crestor would be about $8.80 per month, compared with about $3.80 per month for a month’s supply of Crestor.
The average cost of a 30-tablet pack of Zocor would be about $8.20 per month, compared with about $3.70 per month for a month’s supply of Zocor.
The researchers wrote that the costs of the drugs were too high for consumers who had already been given a trial of a different drug. And they pointed to studies that showed that consumers who pay more than 30% of their average cost of Lipitor would not be able to buy the drug until after the year, or until a year after the drug’s patent expires.
“If we cut price on this drug, I think we’d be getting a good return on our investments in the future,” said Dr. Kumar.
The study was published in the January issue of the, which is a peer-reviewed journal of medical science and medicine. It is funded by AstraZeneca, maker of Crestor.
It analyzed the data from the JAMA study, which looked at more than 40,000 people. The JAMA study was designed to evaluate the impact of cost-cutting measures on pharmaceutical companies’ efforts to bring generics of existing drugs to market.
It found that the average cost of Lipitor would be about $8.50 per month, compared with about $3.70 for Lipitor for a month’s supply of Lipitor.
The average cost of a 30-tablet pack of Lipitor would be about $25.00 per month, compared with about $2.80 per month for a month’s supply of Lipitor.
“I would think that if you’re looking at a product that is going to be sold for a very, very, very, very long time, you’re not going to see an increased level of cost-cutting,” Dr. Kumar told the Journal of the American Medical Association.
He added that he and his team wanted to find out whether or not the cost of the drugs would have an impact if the patent for the drugs expired. “I think the drug companies have a problem with this plan,” he said.
The researchers wrote that they were surprised by the results of the JAMA study. They found that consumers who pay more than 30% of their average cost of Lipitor would not be able to buy the drug until after the year, or until a year after the drug’s patent expires.
